Internships

Some participants in the Arbor program who complete the pre-requisites and demonstrate positive habits and behaviors earn the opportunity to participate in internships. Internships are a great way to earn a little extra money (a stipend) and gain valuable work experience that could translate into a job.

There are currently about 15 Arbor progrtam participants in internships around Yamhill and Marion counties. Pictured at right is Devyne in his internship at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in McMinnville.

Entry-Level Credential - Woods

The Mid–Willamette Woods Consortium in partnership with the Enterprise for Employment and Education has created a process to identify, prepare and funnel entry-level employees into the secondary woods industry. In addition, iLearn Oregon and Tooling U have joined the effort to host on-line courses targeting entry-level workers needs. Funding has been provided through the Workforce Investment Act funding by the Enterprise for Employment and Education.

The ELC Woods program grew out of a similar Entry-Level Credential program first piloted by the Metal Consortium in August 2007. The curriculum and assessment tools were developed after identifying the critical competencies for the woods industry. The program is an intensive, short-term preparation for interviewing at entry-level employment in the woods industry.

The program is made up of three main components:

• On-line self study courses – Approximately 30 courses requiring 30-60 minutes each to
complete. Each have a mastery assessment, students may repeat a class and re-test up to five
times to improve their score.
• Hands-on exercises – Promote active learning and simulate actual on-the-job tasks, successful
completion of the task is required to demonstrate competency in that task.
• Soft skills component – Behavioral observations are recorded and points awarded across
specific soft-skills areas, points are considered into the learner’s overall rating.

At the end of the program a summary report is forwarded to potential employers who may wish to interview the learner for an available entry level position. Several participants at our Woodburn site are working through the ELC Woods course right now and will be tested for their competency on Monday April 19th. Pictured above are Juan, Carlos and Dylan completing one of the hands-on exercises.

Project C.E.O.

Project C.EO. is the foundation of our work readiness training, presented monthly. Participants are given the opportunity to learn job search and employment skills, labor market information and work on personal, academic and professional development. Mock interviews are conducted during the last day of the training to allow participants a chance to practice the skills they've learned during the week.

Mock Interviews Crucial to Success

Every month Project CEO is presented at our three sites. An important part of Project CEO is mock interviews. Business people in Salem, Woodburn and McMinnville join us to create a "real world" environment for participants to practice what they've learned during the week long Project CEO. After the mock interviews the business people, the youth and the Arbor Staff have a discussion about what went right and what could be improved upon. Without the involvement of the local business people, the mock interview process wouldn't have the impact that it does.

A huge THANK-YOU to the following business people for their participation in mock interviews in January! Your time and contribution are appreciated!

Tamara Kendall, Lawyers Title Insurance Corp.
Kara Rotella, United Way
Danielle Hamilton, Wealth Builders University

Salem and Woodburn xOUT Groups Begin

The xOUT program continues it's growth! As of Tuesday January 5th 2010 all three sites will be offering the ex-offender program to youth already enrolled in the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program in their areas.

Salem kicked off their program on Monday, January 4th with approximately eight members. Woodburn starts their program Tuesday January 5th with four members. Including the eight in Mcminnville, that is a total of 20 youth who will be helped to build skills, find employment and continue their education with xOUT program. Arbor's regular year round program continues with many more youth being served in the three sites.

The xOUT groups are peer led. Each group has a Team Leader who is responsible for making sure the members of the group are completing the tasks they are assigned and attending the required sessions. The Team Leader from McMinnville, Skylynn, has been visiting the other sites helping the new groups and Team Leaders get started. When asked about her experience with the xOUT program Skylynn says she's learned a lot in just the few short weeks she's been participating in xOUT. "I'm way more organized than I thought I could be! I'm learning that I can take charge and keep things under control. Everyone is telling me I'm doing a great job and that feels so good!!" Skylynn's success is just the beginning for the xOUT program. (Photo: Jim Maris - Project Director, Lydia Soria - Career Specialist Supervisor and seated Skylynn)

Employers who choose to hire xOUT members have access to a $5000 fidelity bond and a potentential tax credit under the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) program.

For more information about the xOUT program or our year round program please contact the site nearest you. See the contact information on the left.
